To put it simply – a percentage of all paper is typically recycled, but not all paper is recyclable. However, the paper industry is a leader in sustainable forestry. In fact, hundreds of trees are planted for every one tree that is harvested. You can find out more about the American Forest & Paper Association’s commitment to the responsible sourcing and management of wood products here.

Many layout programs have collecting or packaging functions that will automatically collect your document, fonts, all art including and a report. When possible, it is recommended to use these functions because without any or all of these elements we will be unable to print your project.
• Enclose all screen fonts and printer fonts
• Include all placed images
• Make sure your files are set with proper bleed, trim and safety areas.
BLEED: All art trimming off the edge MUST be pulled out 1/8” beyond the trim line
TRIM: This is the guideline where the card will be cut
SAFETY: All art and text within this safety area will assure that nothing will be trimmed off during the cutting process. A 1/4” guide in from the trim should work fine.

For best results, all photos and graphics should be saved at the final output size, in CMYK mode, and set to a resolution of 300 dpi. Images often appear pixelated or blocky when printed at lower resolutions.

Regardless of the program you use, it helps to keep the following items in mind when supplying print-ready files:

  • •  Make sure all images are hi-res (300 dpi or higher)
  • •  Use vector text, drawings and logos whenever possible
  • •  Export the entire project as a PDF in CMYK mode. Files should be saved at final output size, and include 1/8” bleed on all sides
    •      •  Do not compress (or flatten) the PDF
    •      •  Do not include security settings or passwords

PDF (Portable Document Format) is the most common and preferred file format for submitting digital documents for print.

ADOBE INDESIGN: (design)
• Use the “Package” feature listed under “File” to collect all artwork and fonts, then zip or stuff-it
• Save as a Press setting PDF with 0.125 inch bleed on each side
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP: (graphics)
• Save as layered PSD file
NOTE: Not the best choice for text intensive projects. Do not use for 2 color jobs unless saving as a duo-tone or multi-channel. (Contact us for information on these formats.)
ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR: (design/graphics)
• Convert all text to curves
• Embed images or collect and send them
• Save as either native AI, EPS or PDF
COREL DRAW:
Saving your Corel Draw file as an Adobe Illustrator EPS
• Embed all Images
• Convert all your text/copy to outline fonts
• Export as Illustrator EPS
FREEHAND:
• Embed all Images
• Convert all your text/copy to paths
• Export as Illustrator EPS or PDF
PUBLISHER:
NOTE: Native Publisher files are not considered a print-ready format. We must use conversion software to open these files and some layout adjustment is required. To include the 1/8 bleed in Publisher you must increase the actual file size by .25″ – 8.5 x 11 should really be 8.75 x 11.25.

A proof is a representation of your project after all modifications and setup processes have been completed. Oftentimes, projects can be proofed entirely in a digital format, but some require more extensive, printed formats to fine tune color, finishing, or bindery requirements. By carefully reviewing your proof before submitting approval, you can help ensure an accurate, flawless delivery of your print job on the first run.

CMYK is the color model used for full or four-color process offset and digital printing. This process separates graphics into four pre-mixed ink or toner colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and “Key” or Black. Each color is printed sequentially, to achieve a broad spectrum that is not otherwise achievable with other color models.

The Pantone Matching System® (or PMS), is a standardized method for color identification and reproduction in offset printing. It utilizes predefined, publicly available color formulas to produce a wide array of established ink colors. Using PMS inks (rather than CMYK) is referred to as spot color printing.

In short, color is represented differently on screen than when it is printed on paper. The  RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color model is used to display on-screen graphics because it supports a wider spectrum of color in the digital space. The CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) color model is used for printing full or four-color process colors on paper. CMYK can reproduce most—but not all—RGB colors, which contributes to variation when comparing printed paper directly to your screen. This is also why it is important to save all for-print designs in CMYK mode.

When printing on paper especially, white is the most common stock color option. So naturally, the white aspects of a design are interpreted as an absence of ink in that area, and do not “count” as color. However, when printing on any color background (paper, synthetic, textile) white should be considered a color.

Simple jobs are often completed the same day they are submitted. Some jobs, however, may take several days to complete depending on their complexity and size. We always strive to provide an accurate estimate of the turnaround time for each job we do. And we’ll always work with you to find ways to complete your project when you need it.

Great FAQ! Variable data printing is a digital print technique used to personalize direct mail pieces. At the most basic level, this means including the recipient’s name and address directly on the printed mailer. But for real impact, projects can include unique text, graphics and images that speak directly to each individual recipient in your mailing.

We work with many data file types, but Excel or CSV files are preferred. For best results, format your database with individual columns for each data type. From there, enter the corresponding data for each recipient in the fields below. This keeps all the data organized, with each recipient’s information falling on a separate row. If you need assistance with setting up your database file, give us a call – we are happy to help!
